Fan favorite golf pros and longtime buddies Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy have announced some exciting news–in January 2024, they’ll be launching their own league called the Tech-Infused Golf League, or TGL. The league will be a complement to the PGA.
Technology-Infused Golf
TGL stands for “tech-infused golf league,” and many people have questions about what, exactly, that will look like.
Woods and McIlroy have stated that this new tech-focused venture will include golf played on a “data-rich, virtual course complete with a tech-infused, short-game complex.” If you’re wondering what that means, here is a simple breakdown of what we know so far about how the TGL will be played.
TGL competitions will include six teams made up of three PGA players each. Players will play their long game by hitting shots on a virtual screen before moving to a custom-built short-game complex located in the center of the arena. The entire process will be much quicker than traditional golf, with every shot being played within a two-hour time slot.
The venues for TGL competitions will be custom-built arenas designed specifically for tech-infused golf.
Appeal to a New Generation of Golf Fans
The intent behind the TGL is to appeal to a new, younger generation of golf fans. Woods and McIlroy’s vision for the league is to create a golf spectator experience that is more in line with that of professional football or basketball, where people watching in the stands can see every bit of the action.
“TGL will tap into the appeal of team golf within an exciting, fan-friendly environment, comparable to sitting courtside at an NBA game…[it] will widen the appeal of golf to younger and more diverse fans and serve as another avenue to introduce people to the game I love,” said McIlroy.
TGL events will be shorter than typical golf competitions, coming in at two hours apiece, and will be televised in a primetime Monday night timeslot.
We’re excited to see what the new league has to offer, but while we wait for the launch of the TGL, we’ll be busy working on our own game. We’ve got great deals on all the most popular golf balls, so you can do the same.
