The University of San Diego’s Athletic Director has announced that the university is building a short-game golf practice facility designed by legendary pro golfer Phil Mickelson. The facility, called The Purcell Family Short-Game Practice Facility, will cost $2 million to create and is expected to be an impressive cutting-edge setting for the university’s golf team to hone their game.
Phil Mickelson & the Purcell Family Join Forces to Create the Facility
The Purcell Family Short-Game Practice facility is so called because the funding to build the facility comes from Paul M. Purcell, a San Diego alumnus and Board of Trustees member. Purcell says about the project: “Our family is honored to give back to institutions that are very important to us—USD and the game of golf. Our hope is this facility will advance the mission of USD, not just to compete at the top levels of the NCAA, but also make the entire community better through the game of golf.”
In order to create the best possible facility, the University of San Diego is entrusting the design of the facility to pro golfer Phil Mickelson, who is delighted to be a part of the project. Mickelson said “As a result of the generosity of the Purcell family, and a strong commitment from the University of San Diego, I could not be more thrilled to be designing a state-of-the art on-campus golf practice facility for the Toreros..the University of San Diego holds a special place in the hearts of the Mickelson family, and I’m excited to partner with (head coach Chris) Riley in developing something truly special for the young men in the USD program.”
What to Expect from the Facility
We can’t wait to see the finished facility, but in the meantime here is a taste of what you can expect.
The facility will be located on the University of San Diego campus and will feature one acre of natural turf, a large putting green, practice bunkers, a fairway, and rough area. There will also be a 3,000 square-foot clubhouse featuring a hitting bay and golf lab with state-of-the-art technology and equipment, coaches’ office, a lounge area, and conference/study spaces.
Dreaming about this new facility got you ready to work on your short game? Us too. We’ve got plenty of great deals on practice balls for you.
