The world of golf suffered a hard loss on May 21st when PGA Tour Player Grayson Murray took his own life. At just 30 years old, Grayson had made significant contributions to the PGA Tour, most recently winning the Sony Open in Hawaii to start the season. Grayson spoke openly about his life being back on track, making this loss much more difficult to understand.
Grayson Murray’s Career Was Peaking
Grayson had a successful career on the Korn Ferry Tour, winning two events before he made his breakthrough on the PGA Tour. He won the 2017 Barbasol Championship and the 2024 Sony Open in Hawaii.
In 2021, Grayson Murray took a break from professional golf to seek help for his alcohol dependence. He came back in 2022 and didn’t have his best game, but by 2023, he played well enough on the Korn Ferry Tour to get his PGA Tour status for 2024.
During his post-round interview at the Sony Open, he talked about the struggles that he had been through with alcohol and addiction. Grayson spoke positively about where his life was and where it was headed.
PGA Tour Offers an Honorary Tee Time
Grayson played his first round of the Charles Schwab Challenge and then withdrew from the tournament halfway through his second round. The next morning, word had reached PGA Tour officials that Grayson had taken his own life.
The PGA Tour offered to postpone the Charles Schwab Challenge when they were notified of Grayson’s death. However, his family insisted the tournament go on. Grief counselors were available for players, and everyone wore red ribbons on Sundays.
The following week at the UNC Health Championship, it didn’t feel right to simply move on without Grayson. The PGA Tour and Korn Ferry Tour gave Grayson an honorary tee time. They placed his bag on the first tee, and there was a moment of remembrance with his family and friends present.
Most importantly, the Grayson Murray Foundation will soon be launched to promote additction awareness and bring more light to mental health struggles that people face.
The Caddy Without a Player
Jay Green, Grayson’s caddy at the time of his passing, was an integral part of his life. Jay had seen Grayson go through both good times and bad, but he loved his job and loved how kind Grayson was.
Few people understand the situation of being a caddy working at the Charles Schwab Challenge one day and experiencing the loss of your player the next day.
Luckily, Jay already has a few offers from other PGA and Champions Tour professionals, so he won’t be out of work long. Being on the golf course doing what he does best will be a great way for Jay to honor Grayson’s memory.
The Legacy that Grayson Murray Leaves Behind
Grayson’s death raises some difficult yet important topics and has left every golfer with a bit of a reminder that this is just a game. It’s a game that brings us all together and helps us find a common bond. To honor Grayson, that bond should also be to help when those around you may need it.
