The PGA’s new Player Impact Program, or PIP, has been the source of much controversy since it went into effect at the beginning of last year. So, what exactly is the PIP all about? We’ve got the scoop.
What is the PIP?
To put it simply, the PIP is a program that financially rewards the players that bring the most attention to the professional golf industry each calendar year. The PIP was implemented in January 2021, with its first year in action having just concluded and a new year of the PIP beginning in January 2022.
The Player Impact Program was implemented with the intention of helping to bring more attention to golf as a sport and to reward those players who help to give golf its due recognition, but the program has sparked controversy because many people feel that it is unfairly rewarding golf celebrities merely for their level of stardom and not for their skill as golfers.
Players are ranked accordingly by the PIP and are financially rewarded.
How the Money is Distributed
Winner: $8 million
Second place: $6 million
Third to sixth place: $3.5 million
Seventh to tenth place: $3 million
Who is Eligible for the PIP?
Any PGA golfer who has played in at least 5 events in either the current season or one of the preceding 5 seasons is eligible to be considered by the program.
How is PIP Ranking Determined?
PIP ranking is determined by looking at the following factors.
Google Searches: How many times a player appears in Google searches
Media Mentions: How often a player is mentioned in various media worldwide
Nielsen Score: How often a player is featured on a television broadcast
MVP Index: The measure of a player’s reach on social media
Q-Score: The familiarity and appeal of a player or their brand
Whether you agree with the PIP or not, we hope that this brief guide has answered your questions and clarified how the program works.
