The Palmetto Championship, a brand new PGA Tour stroke play event, took place for the first time this year in June at the Congaree Golf Club in Gillisonville, South Carolina. The Palmetto Championship was a one-time event designed to take the place of the 2021 RBC Canadian Open, which had to be cancelled due to the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Congaree Golf Club
The Palmetto Championship marked the Congaree Golf Club’s first time hosting a PGA Tour event, and the golf club did not fail to impress. Congaree is located on an historic 3,200-acre 18th-century estate and is designed to complement its natural surroundings of lakes and longleaf pine forest. Congaree was named Gold Digest’s Best Private Course of 2018, and it’s easy to see why. The course boasts out-of-this-world natural beauty and is known for firm, fast gameplay.
The impressive course is not the only thing that sets Congaree apart from other private golf courses. It also runs the Congaree Foundation, a philanthropic effort that helps improve the lives of underprivileged youth and give these children access to golf lessons, facilities, and equipment. This is both a local and global foundation, helping youth all over the world as well as in South Carolina.
Future Events
The success of the Palmetto Championship, coupled with the newfound publicity of the until-now lesser-known course, has got people speculating about what’s next for Congaree Golf Club. While they didn’t win their bid for the 2025 Presidents Cup (now moved to 2026 due to COVID-19), they made a strong case and the golf club is definitely going to be on officials’ minds as future events are planned. Although the Palmetto Championship was a one-off event, we can’t help but hope to see more PGA events taking place at the Congaree Golf Club in the years to come.
