After there being no Masters in April last year, golf fans everywhere were particularly excited to watch the Masters this year from April 5th to 11th, and the championship did not disappoint. With a landmark win from Japan’s Hideki Matsuyama and incredible playing from those further down the leaderboard, there was plenty of great golf to enjoy.
Hideki Matsuyama’s Victory
2021 marks Hideki Matsuyama’s first PGA Masters win and he is the sixth first-time winner in the past seven years of the championship. Sunday began with Matsuyama in the lead by 4 strokes, but his competitors made him work for it in a very close game that ended with Matsuyama winning with a one-stroke lead (thanks to his impressive birdies and strong ball-striking). This year’s win not only marks Matsuyama’s first green jacket, but the first major championship win for a Japanese man, making it a momentous win not just for Matsuyama but for his country. This win obviously means a lot, and Matsuyama said it best at the green jacket ceremony, simply stating “I’m really happy.”
Will Zalatoris’ Close Second
Will Zalatoris came just one stroke behind Matsuyama on the leaderboard and solidified his place as a pro golfer that’s going to be one of the greats in the years to come. Despite being a rookie, Zalatoris was the only golfer in the 2021 Masters to record four rounds under par and played exceptionally well in the face of the intense pressure of a major championship. We can’t wait to see what comes next for this player!
Xander Schauffele and Jordan Spieth’s Tie for Third
This year at the Masters, third place was held by two golfers, Xander Schauffele and Jordan Spieth. This is Schauffele’s eights top-ten finish in a major championship and his sixth top-five. Schauffele is in good company in third place, too. Spieth played a great game at this year’s Masters with 18 birdies and one eagle.
