If you haven’t tried armlock putting yet, you’ve probably at least heard about it. This putting style is becoming popular with more and more golf pros. Notable golfers Bryson DeChambeau, Webb Simpson, Matt Kuchar, and Will Zalatoris all use the armlock putting grip.
When done right, armlock putting can make your short game stronger and more consistent.
What is Armlock Putting?
Armlock putting is a type of grip where you rest the grip of your putter against your left (or non-dominant) forearm. This essentially means that your left arm becomes an extension of the putter, creating a more natural stroke that doesn’t rely on the hands or wrists.
You need a special kind of putter or an extended grip to successfully practice the armlock putting technique. If you want to convert your conventional putter to an armlock putter, you can buy a special extended grip that can be attached to any putter.
Quick Tips for Armlock Putting
Grasp the putter firmly near the bottom of the grip. Be sure that the top of the putter does not extend past your elbow. Ideally, the end of the putter should remain about two inches below your elbow.
Rest the grip along your non-dominant forearm, locking it into place. Do not use your other hand to keep the putter resting against your forearm.
Place your dominant hand on the grip, slightly lower than your non-dominant hand, to guide your stroke.
Keep your wrists and forearms stable and use your shoulders to guide your stroke. Be sure to engage your core as you make your stroke.
Note that it is considered against the rules to use your hand to hold the putter against your forearm or to have the putter handle extend past your elbow.
