Did you watch the first-ever St. Andrews Bay Championship, which took place from August 24th to August 27th, 2023? If not, here’s a quick look at how it went.
Eugenia Chacarra Wins Inaugural St. Andrews Bay Championship
After a suspenseful playoff, 23-year-old Spanish golfer Eugenio Chacarra won the championship. This marks his first professional win at a non-LIV event. After securing his Victory, Chacarra had nothing but nice things to say about his playoff opponent, Matt Jones. Chacarra told the press: “Happy it came out my way, but I mean, Matt had a tremendous day as well. Tremendous 10 holes. I think we all know he’s a great player.”
Longest Playoff in Asian Tour’s History
It ended in a 10-hole playoff, which is the longest playoff in the Asian Tour’s history. Chacarra beat Australian Matt Jones in the playoff to secure the victory. This playoff doesn’t quite beat the PGA’s record for longest playoff, which was 11 holes at the Motor City Open back in 1949.
The Asian Tour’s International Series
The St. Andrews Bay Championship took place in Scotland, at the Torrance course at Fairmont St Andrews. While a Scottish event on the Asian Tour may seem counterintuitive to some people, this is part of the Asian Tour’s International Series. As the Asian tour’s chief executive Cho Minn Thant told the media when questioned about the St. Andrews event: “It’s the home of golf, and we’re an international golf organization, so why not?”
The St. Andrews Bay Championship is one of 10 stops around the UK as part of the tour’s International Series.
