This year’s Hero World Challenge gave us plenty of great golf to watch, with Viktor Hovland and Scottie Scheffler battling it out for the title.
Viktor Hovland Successfully Defends Title
25-year-old Norwegian golfer Viktor Hovland succeeded in defending his title by winning the Hero World Challenge for the second year in a row. It was a close call, with Hovland beating Scottie Scheffler by just two strokes in the end. Both Hovland and Scheffler played great and were neck-and-neck, but ultimately it was Hovland’s exceptional putting that gave him the winning edge.
This victory makes Hovland the first golfer to win the Hero World Challenge two years in a row since Tiger Woods did it in 2006 and 2007.
Scottie Scheffler’s Fight to the End
A win at this year’s Hero World Challenge would have brought Scottie Scheffler back up to number 1 in the world golf rankings, so he was really hoping to come out on top. He didn’t quite make it, coming in second place just two strokes behind Hovland, but Scheffler still put up a heck of a fight. Scheffler started out three strokes behind Hovland, then a double bogey on the ninth hole put him five shots behind. Despite this, Scheffler managed to run three straight birdies through the 16th hole to get himself within two shots of Hovland. It wasn’t enough to overtake Hovland and win the championship, but Scheffler played amazingly and left fans impressed.
Scheffler was happy with the way that he played, despite not securing a victory. In a statement to the media, Scheffler said, “I said earlier in the week that I don’t like finishing second. It’s not a good feeling right now. But I’m proud of the fight.”
