The 2022 Open Championship took place July 14th-17th 2022 at the Old Course in St. Andrews, Scotland, and fans were given plenty of memorable moments over the course of the weekend. The venue itself was a big draw because of its historical appeal, and both Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy were seen spending time enthusiastically practicing together on the Old Course during the lead up to the event.
Cameron Smith Takes the Win
Australian golfer Cameron Smith won the Open Championship with a stunning score of 64 in the final round. Not only is this Smith’s first win at a Major, but his 64 is the second-lowest final-round score for an Open Championship winner, matching Greg Norman’s 1993 score and only beaten by Henrik Stenson’s final-round score of 63 at Royal Troon in 2016. Smith looked jubilant hoisting the claret jug trophy and afterwards told the press: “I think, to win an Open Championship in itself is probably going to be a golfer’s highlight in their career. To do it around St. Andrews, I think is just unbelievable.”
Rory McIlroy’s Disappointing Finish
Lately, Rory McIlroy has been having trouble coming out on top in a Major, despite being an excellent golfer. It looked like McIlroy was in a good position to win the 2022 Open Championship, but Smith changed all that. McIlroy finished in 3rd place behind Cameron Smith in 1st and Cameron Young in 2nd. McIlroy was understandably disappointed but remained in good spirits after the Open Championship, saying:
“The two Camerons played really well and made life difficult for me…I played a controlled round of golf but where I needed to make some birdies at the start of the Back 9 I just couldn’t…I came a couple short of what I thought I needed. I thought I needed to get to 20 under but I gave another good account of myself this week. I’ve got to keep my head down and keep moving forward.”
One of the things fans love about McIlroy is his dedication to the sport. While this may not have been his best round, we can rest assured that he’ll keep on working at it and improving the areas of his game that need a little help.
