The LIV Golf League has been a controversial topic since it was first announced, and with more golf pros defecting from the PGA to sign multi-million dollar contracts with LIV, it is still just as controversial as ever. Here’s the latest news on what’s up with the PGA and LIV leagues.
Brooks Koepka Joins LIV Golf
Fans were a little surprised to hear that Brooks Koepka has joined the LIV Golf league. Koepka was vocally against LIV before, suggesting that golfers who left the PGA for LIV were sellouts. However, it seems he’s had a change of heart. When questioned about his decision, Koepka said “opinions change. I feel very comfortable with the decision I made. I’m happy, and did what’s best for me.” Koepka sustained a knee injury recently and wants to spend more time at home with his family, which being a part of LIV allows him to do.
Many Endorsement Deals with LIV Players on Hold
Mastercard is the latest in a slew of companies pausing their endorsement deals with golfers who are now playing for LIV Golf instead of the PGA. Mastercard, who had long-standing endorsement deals with Ian Poulter and Graeme McDowell, citing “uncertainties around their standing with the PGA Tour.” Mastercard is simply following suit of other companies that are pulling sponsorships from LIV players. RBC recently suspended deals with Dustin Johnson and Graeme McDowell, Rocket Mortgage cut ties with Bryson DeChambeau, and Phil Mickelson’s sponsorships from Amstel, WorkDay, and KPMG were all suspended.
Rory McIlroy Still Vocally Against LIV
Rory McIlroy has been adamantly against LIV Golf since its inception and his opinion has not changed. He has publicly criticized other PGA players for defecting to LIV and recently told the press that “There’s no room in the golf world for LIV Golf…I don’t agree with what LIV is doing. If LIV went away tomorrow I’d be super happy.” We can probably presume that McIlroy will not be leaving the PGA anytime soon.
