This year’s US Open took place at The Country Club in Brookline, Massachusetts and gave viewers plenty to talk about.
An Action-Packed First Round
The US Open 2022 had plenty going on on the very first day of play. From the LIV Golf drama that follows Phil Mickelson everywhere he goes, to wild turkeys roaming the course at The Country Club, to unexpected players in the lead, day one of the US Open was chock-full of excitement of all sorts. At one point during the first day of play, all 10 leaders were golfers that are outside of the Official Golf World Rankings’ top 100, including Callum Tarren, M.J. Diffuse, and David Lingmerth.
Fighting the Weather
Saturday’s weather took a turn for the worse, with strong winds making things difficult for players and more exciting for spectators. The wind got the better of some players, but a few golfers, including Matt Fitzpatrick and Will Zalatoris, persevered and fought their way through the windy conditions to come in under par.
Matt Fitzpatrick’s Victory
After a competitive day of Matt Fitzpatrick and Will Zalatoris vying for first place, Fitzpatrick eventually came out on top. This victory marked Fitzpatrick’s sixth major win. Both golfers played impressively on Sunday, but the 72nd hole is where things took a turn. Fitzpatrick was one stroke ahead of Zalatoris, and spectators thought he’d lost it when his drive was sent to a faraway bunker, but then Fitzpatrick proceeded to hit an amazing approach shot, allowing him to finish at -6 under par and securing his lead.
