What is Tempo?
In golf, “tempo” is the time it takes to swing your club from setup all the way to follow through. It’s something that has a major impact on the distance and accuracy of your shot, but isn’t talked about that often when we talk about golf fundamentals.
The exact optimal swing tempo will change from player to player, but generally speaking, the best tempo ratio is when swinging your club back takes three times as long as it takes to swing your club down.
Follow these simple steps to improve your swing tempo and watch how it enhances your game as a whole.
Tips to Improve Your Swing Tempo
Relax
If your body is tense, you are likely to swing too fast. To get the right tempo, focus on relaxing your body. Make sure that you warm up before you play and take a few deep, mindful breaths right before hitting the ball.
Loosen Your Grip
More often than not, golfers grip their club too tightly. A too-tight grip makes for a jerky swing tempo. Loosening your grip a little will give you a smoother, more fluid tempo.
Pause at the Top
When you reach the top of your swing, you should add a slight pause. This creates a slight delay and allows for a proper transition between your backswing and your downswing. It also stops you from rushing through your backswing and messing up your tempo ratio.
Feet-Together Drill
This simple drill helps you determine if your tempo is off. To do it, simply stand with your feet very close together, almost touching, and then take a swing as you usually do and hit the ball. If your tempo ratio isn’t right, you will feel unbalanced and have a hard time making contact with the ball. Keep adjusting your tempo until you feel comfortable in the feet-together drill.
