Many people have been talking about LIV Golf for awhile, but now folks are learning more and more about it, including the fact that the Saudi-backed golf league originally wanted Jack Nicklaus at the helm.
LIV Golf
The golf community has been hearing about the controversial Saudi-backed LIV golf league that aims to compete with the PGA. Most people know that LIV Golf is run by Australian pro golfer Greg Norman, but it has only just recently come to light that Norman wasn’t the first candidate for the job. It turns out that LIV approached American golf legend Jack Nicklaus first to run the league and he turned them down, despite a cushy offer.
$100 Million Offer to Nicklaus
LIV Golf was obviously very interested in having Nicklaus run the show. They came to him with a huge offer. Nicklaus told the press:
“I was offered something in excess of $100 million by the Saudis, to do the job probably similar to the one that Greg (Norman) is doing. I turned it down. Once verbally, once in writing. I said, ‘Guys, I have to stay with the PGA Tour. I helped start the PGA Tour.’”
Nicklaus began playing the PGA Tour back in 1962 and continued to play PGA events until his professional retirement in 2005. In a span of just 25 years, between 1962 and 1986, Nicklaus won 18 major championships. His outstanding career with the PGA made him one of the most well known and respected golfers alive today, so his allegiance to the PGA is perhaps not surprising.
Whether you’re a fan of the PGA, LIV Golf, or both, we can all agree that the one thing that beats watching a good game of golf is going out there and playing! Work on your golf game this summer with great deals on all of your favorite balls from the most popular brands.
