What is LIV Golf?
LIV Golf (sometimes referred to as the “Saudi Golf League”) is a new tour run by Australian golfer Greg Norman and financially backed by the Public Investment Fund of Saudi Arabia. The tour will be made up of seven regular season events where players will compete both as part of a team and individually. The tour will conclude with a team championship match. There will be eight events total in 2022, with the first one occurring in June.
LIV is the Roman numeral for the number 54, which is the number of holes to be played at each LIV Golf Invitational Series event. It is also the lowest possible score if a player were to birdie every hole on a par-72 course. The tour boasts more prize money than the PGA, which is surely appealing to participants.
Top Golfers Participating
LIV has announced that 15 of the world’s top 100 golfers are signed up for the first event scheduled for June 9th-11th, 2022, at the Centurion Golf Club in London, a week before the US Open. It has not yet been disclosed which golfers are participating, and there is talk of some of them potentially removing themselves from the event in the wake of Phil Mickelson’s comments about the Saudi financial backing.
Phil Mickelson Controversy
While Phil Mickelson was confirmed as part of the LIV Golf Invitational Series, he has since removed himself from the roster. Back in February 2022, when Mickelson was slated to play in the LIV Golf tour, he referred to the Public Investment Fund of Saudi Arabia as “scary motherf***ers.” Mickelson has since apologized for this comment but he also withdrew his name from the LIV roster on account of a conflicting event also taking place in June.
Whatever you think about the LIV Golf Invitational Series, there’s no denying that it will shake up the way pro golf is played. We’re interested to see how the first LIV season goes and what it means for the PGA in the future.
