After his victory over Kevin Kisner in the championship match of the 2022 WGC-Dell Match Play, Scottie Scheffler hit number one in the Official World Golf Rankings.
The Official World Golf Rankings began in 1986, and Scheffler is the 25th golfer ever to reach number one. It looks at golfers’ scores and number of events played in order to evaluate pro golfers’ performance and rank them accordingly.
“What Does Ranking No. 1 Mean?”
Other American pro golfers who have been ranked number one on the world rankings include Brooks Koepka, Tiger Woods, and Justin Thomas. Clearly, Scheffler is joining some good company at the top of the Official World Golf Rankings.
However, some notable great golfers have never achieved the top spot, including Colin Morikawa, Bubba Watson, and Phil Mickleson.
Basically, what this tells us is that reaching number one on the Official World Golf Rankings is not a necessity to have an incredible golf career–lots of greats never reached number one–but it is still a major milestone that confirms that a golfer has something special about the way they play.
Upon hearing the news about his number one ranking, Scheffler told the press “I never really got that far in my dreams, to be honest with you…I love playing golf, I love competing, and I’m just happy to be out here.”
What Sets Scottie Scheffler Apart
Scheffler is a solid golfer with a great short and long game, but perhaps what sets him apart the most from other golfers is how quickly he’s improving.
Scheffler made the rise from number fourteen to number one on the Official World Golf Rankings in just six weeks. In that time, he also went from never having won any PGA events to having four PGA event wins. With a trajectory like that, fans are understandably excited to see how Scheffler’s career continues to improve and progress.
