Many golf fans cringed while watching Lee Hodges’ tragic attempt to get out of the sand on February 27th, 2022, at the Honda Classic. Hodges used his putter to hit the ball out of the sand and watched as it sailed clean over the green and rolled right into the hazard on the other side. This has left lots of golfers wanting to brush up on their techniques to get out of the bunker. Here are our best tips!
Tips to Get Out of the Sand
Use the Right Club
Don’t make the same mistake as Lee Hodges—never use a putter to try and get out of a bunker. You should choose your golf club based on your position as it relates to the position of the hole. If there is a significant amount of green between you and the hole, opt for a lower loft wedge. If there isn’t much green space between you and the hole, go for a high loft wedge.
Know Where to Put Your Weight
To get out of a bunker, you should put about 60% of your weight on your front foot. This allows you to easily hit the ball at a steeper angle, which helps to get it up and out of the sand. Try to keep your shoulders level–this will move your weight forward.
Pay Attention to Follow Through
Because you shouldn’t be shifting your weight back and forth the way you would in other shots, it’s especially important to work on your follow through for getting out of the sand. Focus on giving your swing a strong follow through and you will give your shot enough power to get you out of the sand and back into the game.
