Fans know Ian “Woosie” Woosnam for his great long game, 29 career wins on the European Tour, and the fact that he has retired a couple times already.
After the 2019 Masters tournament, Ian Woosnam announced his retirement—for the second time. A few years earlier, in 2016, he had announced his retirement due to a health condition that impacts his spine. However, he was back at it and played in the Masters in 2017, 2018, and 2019. After his 2019 announcement and his decision not to play in the 2020 tournament, it seemed to many that Woosnam was retiring for good this time. However, Woosnam fans will be happy to know that he will be coming out of retirement and participating in this year’s Masters tournament, taking place April 5th-11th, 2021.
Woosnam has stated that he decided to play in the Masters this year because he recently had back surgery that has made playing easier on his body. Woosnam has suffered from ankylosing spondylitis, a type of arthritis that causes long-term joint inflammation in the spine, shoulders, hips, and pelvis. Pain from this condition is what Woosnam cited as the main reason for his retirement, so having some relief from his back operation has made him feel like getting back out on the course.
Woosnam will be among the tournament’s oldest players this year at age 63. The 2021 Masters marks the 30th anniversary of Woosnam’s win in 1991. Woosnam was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 2017.
