All of the best golf pros have a pre-shot routine. While it’s an easy thing not to even consider, a pre-shot routine is highly beneficial and will help to speed up your play, adjust to new courses more easily, and gain confidence in your game.
Start Your Routine
Always start your pre-shot routine at the same time. Have an action that signals the beginning of your routine, such as putting on your glove. Having a particular action that begins your pre-shot routine will send a message to your brain that it is time to focus and get in the zone.
Step 2: Focus on Your Target
Take a moment to stop, look at your target, and think about where you want the ball to go. We know this sounds obvious, but it’s an easy step to miss for that very reason!
Step 3: Focus on Your Obstacles
Have a look around. What are the things that are likely to give you trouble on this hole? Water, sand, out of bounds? Take a little time to register these potential setbacks and think about how best to avoid them.
Step 4: Note the Course’s Angles
What does the course lie like? Are you shooting uphill, downhill, or flat? It’s easy to just go right into taking your shot without considering whether you have to accommodate for any inclines on the fairway, so make it a habit to stop and think about this aspect of the course every time.
Step 5: Note the Weather Conditions
Pay attention to the weather. Is there wind? What direction is it blowing in? Or is there no wind? If you stop and consider the weather every time you take a shot—not just on days when the weather is particularly extreme—you’ll get better and better at playing accordingly.
Now that you’ve got your pre-shot routine, go practice it! We’ve got great deals on balls in every grade from your favourite brands.
