Driving range practice can make a big difference in improving your whole game, if you know how to practice effectively. Here are our favourite tips for getting the most out of your time at the driving range.
Stretch First
Look, you’re not going to improve your game much if you aggravate a muscle on your first swing during driving range practice. Warm up your body first by doing some quick stretches to limber up your muscles. It is especially important to stretch your quads, back, neck, and arms.
Have a Target
Many times on the driving range, people will just drive the ball with no particular destination in mind, thinking only of achieving a long distance. It is important to have a particular target in mind where you’re trying to hit your ball to, though. This helps you build overall control of your shot while you get better at distance simultaneously. Change your target every 10 balls or so to give your aim a workout.
Work on Your Short Game
Don’t neglect your short game during your driving range practice. Get in the habit of practicing putting every time you hit the driving range. Remember, a long, controlled drive is great, but it doesn’t mean much if you haven’t honed your short game.
Don’t Rush
It can be tempting to try to make the most of your time at the driving range by hitting as many balls as you can, but it is actually much better for your game to hit fewer balls and really focus on each one. Take a moment before you swing to check your grip, posture, and foot positioning. Breathe and collect yourself. Take your shot when you’re ready. Cultivating this type of practice will increase your focus on the course and will help improve your game much more than just hitting more balls.
