Because everyone is staying home as much as possible right now, it means that a lot of us are really missing the game. One thing you can do while you’re at home is make sure that you’re staying active and exercising the muscles you need to improve your golf game when it’s time to get back out on the links. Here are our 5 go-to at-home exercises for golfers.
Standing Ys
This exercise increases your shoulder mobility. Stand bent at the waist with a flat back, holding a golf club in both hands with your palms facing down. Pull the golf club upwards and stand up so that your arms form a Y shape over your head, then bend back to the starting position and repeat. Use your shoulder blades to make the movement, not the momentum from your arms.
Hand Walks
Hand walks help to prevent golfer’s elbow and tennis elbow (another affliction that golfer’s often get). To do a hand walk, bend at the waist so that your feet and hands are all on the floor. Walk your hands forward until you are in a plank position, then walk your feet towards your hands, keeping your knees straight, until you feel a stretch. At this point, walk your hands forward again and repeat the process.
Russian Twist
This exercise strengthens your obliques, which translates to a stronger, more controlled golf swing. To do a Russian twist, sit down on a mat with your legs stretched out in front of you, knees slightly bent. Holding a medicine ball or another weighted object (use whatever you’ve got around the house—a box of wine works great!) in front of your chest, rotate your body to the right as far as you can (the medicine ball should touch the floor, ideally), then do the same thing on the left and repeat.
Glute Bridges
Glute bridges strengthen your glutes (shocker), lower back, and hamstrings, making for better swing impact control. Lie on your back on a mat with your feet on the floor and your knees bent 90 degrees. Lift your hips up while engaging your glutes so that only your feet and shoulder are pressed into the floor. Lower your hips down onto the floor and repeat.
