Rumors have been swirling for the past few months and now, after more than 27 years, the commercial partnership between Tiger Woods and Nike has officially come to an end.
Woods’ & Nike’s History-Making Partnership
The Nike partnership began when Woods was just 20 years old, and he has been wearing Nike’s iconic red polo at his major championships ever since. The partnership is reported to be worth approximately 500 million dollars over the past 27 years, making it the most lucrative partnership in the history of golf. Over the course of the Nike partnership, Woods became one of the most famous and recognizable athletes in the world.
Tiger Woods’ Statement
Woods announced the end of his partnership with Nike by posting the following statement to social media:
“Over 27 years ago, I was fortunate enough to start a partnership with one of the most iconic brands in the world,” read the statement. “The days since have been filled with so many amazing moments and memories. Phil Knight’s passion and vision brought this Nike and Nike Golf partnership together and I personally want to thank him, along with the other Nike employees and incredible athletes I have had the pleasure of working with along the way. People will ask if there is another chapter. Yes, there will certainly be another chapter.”
While we don’t know all the details around the reasons behind the split from Nike, it’s clear from his statement that he doesn’t have any ill will towards the company, and is particularly grateful to Nike’s co-founder Phil Knight. Nike also issued a statement, saying:
“For over 27 years, we have had the honor to partner with Tiger Woods, one of the greatest athletes the world has ever seen. Throughout the course of our partnership, we have witnessed along with the rest of the world, how Tiger not only redefined the sport of golf, but broke barriers for all of sport.”
There is, of course, plenty of speculation about who Woods will collaborate with next (popular guesses include TaylorMade and On Running), but as of yet nothing has been officially announced.
