Tips to Improve Accuracy in Golf

1. Practice Low-Trajectory Shots

Practice your low-trajectory shots to improve control. The more control you have over your shot, the more accurate it will be. To achieve a low-trajectory shot, start by positioning the ball at the center of your stance and slightly shift more weight onto your left side. Move the club back until your left arm reaches the 9 o’clock position. Swing down, striking the back of the ball. The grass will naturally restrict your follow-through, giving you a lower trajectory and more control.

2. Use the Box Drill to Stop Slicing

Slicing is a common problem that negatively affects accuracy in golf. The box drill is a simple drill that will help you stop that slice and improve your accuracy.  You’ll need a small box for this drill – a golf-ball box is the perfect size. Stand the box on its side just in front of your ball, parallel with your target. Now hit your ball over the box. This will be tough at first, but the more you do it, the easier it will get. Once you’ve mastered the box drill, you will notice that you are not slicing as frequently and your shots should become more accurate.

3. Hit Through the Ball

Hitting through the ball instead of just hitting the ball and cutting your swing short on impact goes a long way in improving accuracy. When you swing, focus on carrying your swing all the way through after you hit the ball. This will make your shot straighter and easier to predict.

4. Use Visualization

Using visualization methods can make it easier to actually send the ball where you want it to go. Try this: Look at the spot where you want your ball to land. Next, imagine a hula hoop located 10-20 yards in front of your target. Then, when you swing, imagine your ball going through your imagined hoop in order to land at your target. Having both your target and your “hoop” in mind when you swing will help you think about both where you want your ball to land and the path it needs to take to get there, which will help you shoot more accurately.
